Even with the gradual loosening of restrictions, many companies have announced that they will continue to allow their employees to work from home. In many cases, it is the employees themselves who ask to be allowed to work remotely, as this type of arrangement better suits their personal, family, scheduling, and productivity needs. For many companies with international teams, the idea of working remotely is not new and fits into already well-established mechanisms, but for companies that have only adopted this practice during the pandemic, the change may not be easy, especially in terms of team bonding<\/strong><\/a>. How do you develop a sense of community when working with a virtual team? Here are some tips derived from our experience as a company that has been partly implementing this way of working for many years.

Give your communications a regular rhythm, without forcing it<\/h3>\n

Meeting regularly, on the virtual platform of your choice, is crucial to keeping your team united: your colleagues must be perceived as part of your professional “environment”, even if you do not meet physically. Initially, it is essential for these meetings to take place on a regular basis. However, be careful not to fall into the routine trap: online meetings should not be longer than they need to be, otherwise they will be perceived as obligations that “steal” time from your life and productivity. Furthermore, when the team is well established, it is a good idea to reduce the frequency of meetings and to follow the basic principle of true workplace happiness: if it fits in a phone call do not schedule a meeting for it, if you can put it in an email don\u2019t make a phone call about it, if you can whatsapp it don\u2019t put it in an email. This will show respect for your own and others’ time<\/strong> and maintain the genuine enthusiasm of virtual meetings when they are actually useful.<\/p>\n

Keep all employees informed of the team’s successes<\/h3>\n

A feeling of alienation is one of the main risks of remote working: if employees do not interact with their colleagues and the company itself, they are at risk of perceiving themselves as monads. This leads to a sense of detachment between the priorities and goals of the individual and those of the company, resulting in a loss of motivation. To avoid this, it is essential to keep all team members informed about the successes and achievements not only of the company, but also of individual employees<\/strong>, so that such achievements can be celebrated by all. This keeps everyone’s attention on the common goals and revives individual motivation and team spirit.<\/p>\n

A healthy working environment is one in which the needs of employees are respected. And to respect the needs of your employees it is essential to know them. If you have to manage a team working remotely and do not know how to make the working environment comfortable for your employees, the best you can do is ask! You may find, for instance, that some employees would rather work remotely only some days a week, or that your team prefers some social activities to others<\/strong><\/a>.
