Nearly everyone has been to a conference with poor access for disabled people. It is not required to be on-trend or politically correct to confront this problem. Forty years ago accessible events were the exception, nowadays, luckily, they are the norm, disabled people are more vocal about their needs and society does more for them. Accessibility is an issue that has been in the mainstream media for a while now. Over recent years, there has been a shift in the way that disability is viewed by the general public which is largely attributed to more disabled people getting involved in activism, social media and the public debate in general. As a planner, making your events accessible should not be about ticking boxes on legal requirements, but making sure you hold space for a diverse audience<\/a><\/strong>, adapting your venue and organizational process to the need of your attendees, rather than expecting them to adapt to what you offer.

Accessibility guidelines: how do you make your events accessible?<\/h3>\n

From the moment you step foot in an event venue, to when you leave, you should be able to use every single aspect of it (to the best of your ability) without barriers. In this article, we am going to talk about what accessibility really means and go through a few easy ways to make your event accessible and inclusive. Accessible events are not only beneficial for disabled people but also for the rest of your attendees, who will enjoy a richer, more diverse environment in which to network. After all, it will attract a wider demographic that can contribute to its success.

\nCompliance with disability regulations<\/strong> (i.e. having wheelchair ramps and disabled toilets) is the bare minimum but not enough<\/strong>. Disabilities include a vast range of variants (hearing, sight, dietary restrictions, neurodivergent needs, sensory needs, allergies). If the event is small enough, ask people what they need to be able to attend. If not, look for guidance to disabled people organizations and try to be as inclusive as possible.<\/p>\n
