Corporate events can leave a significant carbon footprint. From transportation to food to waste, conferences and meetings often drain resources and harm the environment. But it doesn’t have to be that way. With careful planning and a commitment to sustainability, events can minimise ecological impact<\/strong> while still being memorable and successful. GECO<\/strong><\/a>, in partnership with Smart Eventi<\/strong><\/a>, recently helped client C Consulting S.p.A.<\/strong> organise a carbon-neutral event<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Choosing a LEED-Certified Venue<\/h3>\n

The first step was selecting a venue aligned with our sustainability goals. We chose a LEED-certified space<\/strong> <\/a>in Milan’s Porta Garibaldi neighborhood<\/strong>. This modern “gem” met key criteria: energy efficiency, close proximity to public transit, and on-site catering to reduce transportation emissions.<\/p>\n

Right away, the venue set the stage for an event that would reduce environmental impact. Attendees could easily reach the conference via metro or train, avoiding traffic and fossil fuel-burning cars. The space itself was designed for optimal electricity and water efficiency<\/strong>. And we would source catering directly from the venue’s kitchens.<\/p>\n

Local, Organic Catering<\/h3>\n

Catering offered perhaps the biggest opportunity to “go green.” We worked closely with the venue’s caterers to craft a menu focused on local, organic, and responsibly-sourced ingredients. From artisanal dishes to Slow Food specialties, the menu reflected values of sustainability and social responsibility<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Rather than relying on international supply chains that burn fuel in transit, we chose ingredients from regional farmers and food artisans. This not only minimised carbon emissions, but supported local economies.<\/p>\n

Calculating and Offsetting Carbon Footprint<\/h3>\n

A key part of our eco-friendly execution was measuring and offsetting the event’s carbon footprint<\/strong>. Using our GHG Protocol-based platform, we analyzed key sources of emissions, including:<\/p>\n

We then purchased certified carbon credits<\/strong> to offset the conference’s footprint. Our investment will support emissions-reducing clean energy projects in Africa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Educating Attendees<\/h3>\n

Beyond logistics, we integrated sustainability into the event’s messaging itself. A video presentation<\/strong> educated attendees about the eco-friendly planning, enlightening participants on how green choices impacted the event. Our goal was to share our values and involve attendees in this vision<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This conference was not a one-time initiative, but part of our broader mission to make events greener while improving our clients’ reputation and social responsibility.
