Life Cycle Assessment offers a “cradle to grave” look at a product or process, considering environmental aspects and potential impacts through the systematic approach of examining a product’s complete life cycle from raw materials to final disposal.

In particular, LCA has become a fundamental tool for quantifying environmental performance, allowing designers to identify critical hotspots and make more informed trade-offs.

Modular design and the longevity strategy

One particularly effective strategy involves modular design, where products are constructed from independent, interchangeable components. The result is an almost organic vision of contemporary industry, one that has already produced tangible examples such as Park 20|20 near Amsterdam, developed according to the Cradle to Cradle philosophy and designed by green building pioneer William McDonough.

The implementation gap and practical challenges

Theory and practice don’t always align neatly. An imbalanced focus exists across product life-cycle stages, with most studies addressing design and end-of-life, while production, use-life, and distribution remain underexplored. Only Ecodesign provided quantitative evaluation tools in comparative studies, confirming the need for such tools in the design process to prevent unforeseen impacts.

This creates a genuine dilemma: nature-inspired strategies generate broader, more innovative solutions at the function and systems level, but they lack the rigorous evaluation frameworks that LCA-based ecodesign provides. Designers need both the expansive thinking that biomimicry encourages and the quantitative assessment that prevents well-intentioned designs from creating unintended environmental problems elsewhere in the system.

The shift towards sustainable design isn’t merely about replacing materials or tweaking manufacturing processes. It’s about fundamentally reconsidering what products are for, how long they should last, what happens when they’re no longer needed, and whether their existence creates more value than harm. That’s considerably more complicated than the old model, but then again, the old model is precisely what got us here.

Looking for expert advice on corporate sustainability?
