One tells you it carries a 10% chance of death. The other tells you it has a 90% chance of success. Nothing about the surgery has changed, yet most people feel a completely different level of comfort depending on which sentence they hear first. That, in a nutshell, is the framing effect, and it has been quietly running the show behind an awful lot of decisions you assumed were entirely your own.

What the framing effect actually is

The framing effect is a cognitive bias whereby the way a message gets worded shapes how people perceive it and, eventually, what they decide. Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky put this on the map back in 1981, publishing a now-famous study in Science built around a hypothetical disease outbreak.

Participants were asked to choose between two responses to the same medical scenario, described once in terms of lives saved and once in terms of lives lost. The underlying numbers stayed identical throughout the experiment. The choices people made, however, shifted dramatically depending purely on the wording, with a gain-framed version nudging most respondents towards caution and a loss-framed version pushing them towards risk. Decades of replication later, the pattern still holds up remarkably well.

Get in touch to organise your next marketing campaign!

IKEA has used a similar trick rather cleverly, first pointing out that only a small share of people associate their home with play and joy, then following up with the more optimistic finding that those who do use their home that way report a noticeably brighter outlook on life. Same data set, entirely different emotional trajectory.

Why our brains fall for it every single time

None of this happens because people are gullible. It happens because brains process information through pre-existing mental models and emotional shortcuts rather than through cold, detached logic.

A positively framed message tends to switch on reward-related circuits, generating a sense of gain worth chasing. A negatively framed one activates threat-detection instead, triggering caution and a stronger urge to protect what’s already there. Marketers who understand this aren’t manipulating anyone in some sinister, cinematic sense; they’re simply speaking the language the brain already uses to sort through options. Used well, with data, statistics and genuine storytelling behind it, framing becomes a way to highlight what actually matters to an audience rather than burying it under noise.

Where this gets genuinely useful: organising an event

Picture a client staring down forty possible venues, a dozen catering styles and more team-building formats than anyone could realistically compare in an afternoon. Leaving that client entirely alone with the full catalogue isn’t generosity, whatever certain consultants might tell you; it’s abandonment dressed up as freedom.

Years spent running marketing campaigns, communication projects and full-scale event organisation for hundreds of clients teach you exactly where that line sits. A well-run agency doesn’t hand over a spreadsheet and wish you luck. It frames the options: this venue suits a reveal built around excitement and gain, that one suits a message about resilience and shared effort, this format works because the data says your audience engages more with hands-on activities than passive ones. None of that removes the client’s autonomy. If anything, it hands back the one thing genuinely lost inside decision paralysis, namely focus.

Turning influence into an honest advantage

That’s the philosophy behind every marketing campaign, communication strategy and live event we create. When used thoughtfully, the framing effect can help shape events that are more closely aligned with a client’s objectives, making it easier to navigate choices around venues, formats, activities and ways of engaging participants.

Good framing starts with listening carefully to what the client actually needs and then selecting and presenting the options that genuinely make sense for that particular project, rather than turning freedom of choice into an endless list of almost identical possibilities. In this way, framing does not limit choice but gives each option context, helping turn a collection of alternatives into a considered decision and, ultimately, into an event built around a clear and meaningful idea

Would you like to promote your event?
