2016 UEFA Champions League Final – Milan, May 28th

The Stadium

The Giuseppe Meazza Stadium is more commonly known as San Siro and it has already hosted the Champions League final three times, in 1965, 1970 and 2001. Built in 1925, this stadium currently serves as the home of the two local teams, A.C. Milan and F.C. Internazionale Milano, also known as Inter. The approved capacity for UEFA matches is set as just under 80.000 seats and for this particular edition extra security measures are likely to be employed.

The Champions League Final

This will be the final match of the the 61st season of the UEFA Champions League. Victory in this match determines the right to play against the winners of the Europa League, which takes place 10 days earlier in Basel, in the 2016 UEFA Super Cup. The winning team will also qualify for the semi-finals of the 2016 FIFA Club World Cup. For the first time, San Siro will host a final in which neither of the resident teams will be eligible to compete, as neither Milan nor Inter finished in the top three of last season’s Italian Serie A tournament and are therefore not allowed to play in the 2015-2016 UEFA Champions League. For this edition of the tournament, a ball has been especially designed by Adidas, the Finale Milano, decorated with a few of the city’s most iconic symbols. At the time of writing this post, the round of 16 is being disputed and the teams in the run are Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, Benfica, Zenit, Gent, Wolfsburg, A. S. Roma, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Barcelona, Juventus, Bayern Munich, PSV Eindhoven, Atletico Madrid, Dynamo Kiev and Manchester City.
The final will be disputed between the teams that will win the semi-finals.
