Dear companies, let us tell you: you do not understand TikTok. The youngest among social networks is no longer the exclusive domain of 13-year-olds and nowadays it boasts a large adult user base, but it continues to stand out for the prevalence of organic content and the emphasis placed on the creativity of the users themselves. This does not necessarily exclude the possibility of marketing your company on TikTok– there are specific tools provided by the platform – but it does mean that in order to do so it is necessary to master a very different language than that used on other social media. And many companies make blatant mistakes when confronted with this language. Some time ago, for instance, a well-known German news programme tried to appropriate the language of teenagers by forcing its highly serious journalists to perform dance routines. The result, from the point of view of younger audiences, can be summed up in one word: cringe.
