What would you say, if we told you team building was a thing in the Middle Ages? It seems incredible, yet, in a sense, it’s true! Of course, they didn’t plan escape rooms or talk about problem-solving, but we find the earliest traces of the concept in the practice of commemorating the key milestones in a company’s development, a tradition with roots far older than we might imagine. In fact, the craft guilds of medieval Europe already organised annual banquets to mark their anniversaries, with the aim of fostering a sense of belonging to the trade and strengthening relationships among members. With the industrial expansion of the nineteenth century, the celebration of these anniversaries took on a new function and, in the contemporary landscape, has become a tool for enhancing corporate visibility.
