Sustainable Events: Why Accessibility Matters

Let’s stop calling them sustainable events if they’re not accessible

Written by Lucia Conti

There’s more and more talk about sustainability. Yet, when organizing events, people often have only one type of participant in mind and fail to realize that there is no sustainability without inclusion, and no inclusion without accessibility. If you only start thinking about accessibility when someone points out a specific need, it means you’re already getting it wrong. Even if you do your best to accommodate that request, quite simply, you should have thought about it earlier. An event that excludes even a single person is not fully inclusive and, therefore, not truly accessible. This needs to be considered from the outset, not addressed halfway through the planning process.
