Eco-design and the future of sustainable creativity

Written by Lucia Conti

Traditional design processes prioritised function, aesthetics, and cost, relegating environmental considerations to an afterthought if they appeared at all. That model has become increasingly untenable as sustainability has moved to the centre of contemporary design thinking. Eco-design changes the framework entirely, placing environmental responsibility at the core of the creative process rather than treating it as a constraint to work around after the fact. At its essence, sustainable design is a considered approach to creating objects that accounts for planetary impact from the outset, aiming to minimise negative environmental consequences across a product’s entire journey, from raw material sourcing through manufacturing and use to end-of-life disposal.
