“Workation’, the new trend matching work and relaxation

workation
Written by Lucia Conti
The term workation is a combination of the words “work” and “vacation”. It is a concept supported by an increasing number of people who choose locations that allow them to work remotely while also relaxing in a beautiful setting.

A similar logic is followed in the business travel sector, and in general, the trend is expanding in 2022 and becoming a more established model.

Workations are here to stay

Workation differs from smart working in that it involves both working and relaxing while on vacation. Enjoying the view of a sunset lighting up a mountain peak, swimming in a pool, or just taking a short break between a phone call and an email. This removes the physical barriers imposed by office work and the mental constraints that render work and relaxation incompatible.

Hotels and holiday resorts also have become aware of this new attitude, and the more discerning entrepreneurs jumped on board right away. Many tourist attractions are already adapting and offering unlimited bandwidth, rooms with fully equipped workstations, and family packages that include babysitting or children’s entertainment. Offering this type of experience is also a priority for corporate travel providers who cater to all needs.

While all of this is necessary, it is not sufficient, especially when considering sustainability as an unavoidable goal. Indeed, the minimal environmental impact criterion must be applied to the workstation experience. The ecological and climatic challenges of this millennium will be the test-bed for true human progress, and thus such an assessment cannot be ignored when discussing innovation.

The sustainable workation

When considering a workation, such implications must be approached with the understanding that a sustainable offer cannot be improvised. Staying at a holiday destination is not necessarily less harmful in terms of emissions than driving to work every day.

While it is true that working remotely reduces the CO2 emissions normally associated with commuting, it is also true that it costs more in terms of energy to power multiple holiday destinations to cater for professional needs than it does to power a single building in which many people work at the same time.

As a result, new workstation facilities must be designed with a sustainable, appropriately certified approach, and businesses must budget for the costs of providing a sustainable workstation experience.

To broaden your perspective even further, consider how this new trend could change the fortunes of beautiful little-known destinations or picturesque depopulated villages. These locations could be reborn as part of a project that brings together territory, local communities, businesses, and smart workers. Whoever is in charge of perfecting the infrastructure will also have to build an organic relationship with companies, which will result from the meeting of perfectly complementary needs.

Getting it right provides numerous benefits, including increased contact with nature and thus increased mental and physical well-being for those who go on workations, new spaces, cities, and communities oriented toward sustainability and ecological sensitivity, better working conditions, and advantages for local businesses, which will be able to implement a more evolved and effective business model.
